Residential Overcrowding: Penalties in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport is actively addressing residential overcrowding through its "Your Home, Your Responsibility" campaign. The initiative focuses on regulating property and residential unit occupancy to ensure a safe and high-quality living environment across the emirate. The Abu Dhabi City Municipality is conducting inspections of overcrowded housing units as part of this effort.

The campaign, launched in March, aligns with the "Year of the Community 2025" goals, aiming to improve residents' quality of life and promote social cohesion. The primary goal is to raise awareness, with warnings issued to violators before fines are imposed. Fines for violations range from AED 5,000 to AED 1 million. Overcrowding is defined as exceeding a unit's capacity and the services it is designed for.

The campaign seeks to eliminate negative consequences associated with overcrowding, such as compromised safety and public decency. Tenants are encouraged to avoid violations by renting only officially registered properties listed in the "Tawtheeq" system and ensuring vehicle registration in designated parking areas under the "Mawaqif" system.

The Department urges citizens, property owners, and companies to adhere to occupancy limits and house laborers in designated areas. Residents are encouraged to report overcrowding through the “TAMM” platform, emphasizing the importance of complying with leasing and occupancy regulations to maintain Abu Dhabi's aesthetic and urban standards.
